Personal creative projects are what keep my passion for photography alive. Every year I do a handful or two (or three) of editorial inspired portraits. This year I took it to a whole new level with an eleven part color series. Think every color of the rainbow plus pink and all the neutrals.
Planning + Materials
The first step was finding my models, this is usually the easiest part as the town I live in is full of creative humans. Once I had confirmed I had the models needed to complete this project, I started searching for inspiration. Next, I presented the vision to each model to make sure they vibed with the theme. Finally, I purchased backdrop paper and began the hunt for props.
The hardest part of the entire project was coordinating 11 different schedules. Because this was a personal project, I’m not as strict with rescheduling which ended up being a disaster for me as eight of the eleven sessions needed to be rescheduled. With that said, what should have taken me a total of two months ended up taking me nearly four months to complete.
Set Up & Location
I don’t believe you need to have the best of the best equipment to produce the best of the best images. In my opinion, you need a vision and you need creativity. With those two things, you can create anything. I don’t have a large, nice studio set up, but I do have a spacious garage with a single window. This garage studio has worked wonders for most of my creative endeavors. In the end, I used a cheap backdrop stand, color paper backdrops, an on camera flash, and my Canon r6 mark ii to create this series.
Conclusion
I love every one of these shoots for different reasons. Being able to connect with other like-minded creatives is so fun and so important for keeping your passion alive.
